Add language to Android Lollipop keyboard

Just spent too much time figuring out how to add a language to a keyboard, in order to get spell checking and auto type suggestions in the right language.

Here’s how:

  1. Settings app > Personal > Language & input
  2. screenshotSelect the keyboard you’re using, as in the screenshot to the right. Don’t tap ‘Current Keyboard’
  3. You’re now in the keyboard’s Settings screen. Tap Languages.
  4. Toggle off ‘Use system language’, and pick the languages you need.

Done. Now, when typing, you can switch languages by holding the space bar.

    1. Well, it’s in a different place on Android 8 Oreo: Settings -> General -> Language and time -> Language and input.
